NL Team Notes - May 16, 2005

Atlanta - The Vixens as a whole have been horrid as of late - of the 10 top stat categories, they rank 14th, 15th or 16th in all but 3 - team average (.256, 8th), team walks (98, 9th) and stolen bases (25, 10th). RHP Fiona Apple has been the lone bright spot - she is 4-1 with a 1.17 ERA over her last 5 games.

Los Angeles - Despite hitting a dismal .225 (last in the VBL), the Amazons are 6th in home runs with 40. In 11 games and 11.1 ip's, middle reliever Jessica Biel has a 4-0 record. The pitching staff has been living dangerously - though they have third best team ERA at 3.50, they have third worst opponents' batting average at .268.

Miami Beach - The Flamingos have stretched their lead to 6 games in the NL East. They are first in both hitting (.277) and pitching (3.43 ERA). LF Jo O'Meara continues to lead the NL in hitting with a .376 average. She is tied for the NL lead in homers with 8.

Philadelphia - The Belles allowed Miami Beach to put some room between them by going 3-7 over their last 10 games. Starting pitching has been horrid - Amanda Swisten (5 games, 1-3, 5.96 ERA), Ione Skye (3, 1-2, 7.80) and Lisa Snyder (3, 1-2, 8.59) are the three biggest offenders. Youngsters Vida Guerra (3-3, 3.51) and Stacie Orrico (3-3, 2.82) have provide the leadership for the hurlers.

Phoenix - 1B Calista Flockhart (17 hr's), OF Steffi Graf (15), and OF Erika Christensen (16) have been lighting up AAA ball with their power display. But none are considered to be strong candidates to make the Firebirds' roster. P Victoria Beckham, a strong candidate to be promoted to the bigs after going 4-1 in 8 games with a 2.30 ERA at AAA San Diego, was lost for the season after suffering a torn rotator cuff.

Sacramento - The Sirens have been struggling to keep pace in the NL West. Despite a 5-5 record over their last ten games, the Sirens still sunk even deeper into last place. LHP Allison Mack has begun to impress - over her last 4 starts, she is 2-2 with a 2.73 ERA. More promising is her ability to eat up innings - over those 4 starts, she had 29.2 innings - an average of over 7 innings a start.

St. Louis - The Unicorns continue their descent toward the NL East basement, with only Atlanta blocking their way. They have been terrible in almost all aspects of their game. They are hitting a lot of homers though - they rank 4th in the VBL with 42. 2B Cleopatra Higgins, who started the season strong, is only hitting .200 (4-20) over her last 5 games.

Seattle - The Emeralds took over first in the NL West with a 7-3 record over their last 10 games. The Emerald hitters, led by 2B Sonia Couling (.357, 5 hr, 25 rbi), have consistently been among the league leaders the entire season. But with the recent return of young phenom, RHP Amanda Bynes, the pitchers have begun to take control. Youngsters Bynes (2-0, 1.40 ERA) and RHP Aurelie Claudel (2-0, 2.13) have led the way.

AL Team Notes - May 16, 2005

Baltimore - 1B Martina McBride, hitting .301 with 20 doubles, 8 homers, and 31 rbi's, was on the verge of joining the Robins from the AAA Washington Glory when she tore a groin muscle and will be out for 5 weeks. All five starters have an ERA under 4.00. Over each of their last three games, Christy Thom (2-1, 1.52), Michelle Branch (2-1, 2.18), Nia Peeples (2-1, 2.31) and Joanne Whalley (3-0, 2.31) are a combined 9-3.

Boston - 1B Lisa Kudrow is hitting .299 with 16 homers and 30 rbi in just 117 ab's for the AAA Connecticut Crush. On 5/14 against Chicago, RHP Chandra North threw 8.1 innings of one hit, shutout ball, but still ended up with no decision. Her Banshee counterpart, Tweet Keys threw 7.2 innings of three hit, shut out ball to match her. North was relieved with one out in the ninth after giving up a walk and Boston won it on 3B Sheryl Swoopes' 2 run homer in the bottom of the inning.

Chicago - 1B Julia Ormond won her 1st Player of the Week award (for the week ending 5/9) She hit .417 with 10 RBI and slugged 1.083 in 24 at bats. Her season numbers are: .353 AVG, 41 hits, 9 doubles, no triples and 8 bombs, along with 24 RBI and 23 runs scored. He's 3rd in the American League in batting, 4th in homeruns and 2nd in RBI! She has been the Banshees' most consistent threat on offense.

Colorado - Despite a team batting average of .233 (13th in the VBL), the Valkyries are first in home runs with 51. CF Jodie Foster has 1o and RF Patricia Arquette has 9 to pace the Valkyries. SS Meg Ryan is the only regular with an average above .300 (.302). On the defensive side, they are 14th in home runs allowed in the league (44) and first in opponents' average .227.

Dallas - RHP Charisma Carpenter continues to be one of the only bright spots in the Diamonds' rotation - over her last 3 games, she was 3-0 with a 1.90 ERA. For the year, she is 5-1 with a 2.35 ERA. 2B Hilary Swank is day-to-day after being hit by a pitch and dislocating her finger.

Detroit - CF Kim Braatz-Voisard has been on a tear - over her last 10 games she is hitting .436 (17-39). However, due to the lack of baserunners in front of her, she has only 6 rbi's over that span. She is the only Divas regular hitting above .280. The Divas are last in the VBL in runs scored (125) and home runs (21). That is an average of only 1 home run every 1.8 games.

New York - 2B Shakara Ford was named the AL Player of the Week for the week ending 5/15. In 22 at bats she hit .455 with 3 HR and 5 RBI. She got at least one hit each game that week and is on a 10 game hitting streak right now. Her season features a batting average of .273 (35 hits in 128 AB), 10 doubles, one triple and 6 homeruns. Ford has collected 18 RBI and 21 runs as well.

Texas - The Wildcats are still in a dead heat with Colorado for first in the AL West. Starter Magdalena Wrobel has struggled during the month of May. After starting the season 4-2 with a 2.98 ERA, she is 0-3 in her last 3 games with a 5.40 ERA. CF Jessica Simpson has been on a tear of late. Over her last 6 games, she is hitting .450 (9 for 20) with a homer and 5 rbi's.

NL Team Notes - May 2, 2005

Atlanta - Besides Walks and Stolen Bases, the Vixens are not ranked above 11th in any of the top ten categories. Pitchers have given up a VBL-high 31 home runs and their opponents' average is a VBL-high .282. In her last three games, Rebecca Romijn has a 8.59 era in 14.2 ip. 1B Bai Ling continues her hot pace. She was 7-19 for a .368 average over her last 5 games. She leads the team for the year with a .326 mark. CF Tawny Kitaen had a great week - she went an amazing 11-25 (.440) with 1 hr and 6 rbi in 8 games.

Los Angeles - Second round pick, 2B Leah Remini, continues to struggle. Her season average is a dismal .222 after going 2-15 (.133) over her last 5 games. LF Anna Kournikova is also having a hard go of it, hitting .228 on the season and 2-17 (.118) over her last 5 games. Kournikova does lead the VBL with 12 steals however. Only 2 of the 8 hitters with 35 or more ab's have an average above .228.

Miami Beach - Though pitching has led the way to the Flamingos being in first - its staff is first in the VBL in ERA (3.00), opponents average, (.223) and runs allowed (77) - the hitters are not to be overlooked. They are 4th in hitting and in the top half of the league in almost every other category. The pitching staff is led by Elisabeth Shue (4-1, 2.70), Whitney Houston (4-2, 3.69) and Lauren Ambrose (1.93, 10 saves), while Jo O'Meara (.387, 7 hrs, 18 rbi) and Julia Roberts (.370) lead the hitters.

Philadelphia - The Liberty Belles fell out first place to 3 games out by going 3-7 over the last 10 games, and their pitching can be blamed. The team is in the bottom five of the major pitching categories, due mostly to poor middle relief. Four of the five starters have era's below 4.00, and closer Julianne Moore has been superb, but the shaky middle relievers consistenly are blowing leads. C Keisha Knight Pulliam has improved her average to .339 on the year after going 9-20 (.450) over her last 5 games.

Phoenix - The Firebirds kept a hold of first place despite going 5-5 over their last 10 games. Their next 8 games are against division foes Seattle and Sacramento. CF Ziyi Zhang is second in the NL with a .398 average; her obp is .451. P Shirley Manson is 2-0 in her last 3 games with a 1.8o era (19 ip).

Sacramento - A 3-7 record over the last 10 games dropped the Sirens into last place in the NL West. 3B Amber Smith continues to struggle at the plate. Over her last 6 games, she hit only .105 (2-19) and is hitting only .149 for the year. Since being promoted from the AAA Anaheim Larks on 4/12, 3B Gabrielle Reece is hitting .375 (12-32). P Vanessa Marcil has 9.00 era over the last three games (13.0 ip).

St. Louis - The big three in the rotation - Megyn Price, Missy Elliot and Lela Rochon - have got the Unicorns nearing the .500 mark. Price (3-0, 1.16 era, 23.1 ip), Elliot (3-0, 1.19, 22.2) and Rochon (2-0, 3.00, 18.0) are all undefeated in their last three starts. If the Unicorns can get another starter or two to contribute, they could make a serious run for first place. 2B Cleopatra Higgins leads the NL with a .408 average.

Seattle - P Valeria Golina has been a pleasant addition to the Emeralds' rotation. Since being claimed off waivers from the Boston Shamrocks on 4/22 and promoted to the active roster on 4/25, she has gone 1-1 in two starts with a 3.21 era. With the eminent return of P Amanda Bynes from the DL, the rotation has the potential to move from being a weakness to being a strength. LF Jill Scott hit an incredible .579 (11-19) with a homer and 8 rbi's over her last 5 games. Scott was named the NL Player of the Week (5/2), hitting .520 with 1 HR and 8 RBI while slugging .840.

AL Team Notes - May 2, 2005

Baltimore - Winning 7 of their last 10 games, the Robins moved out to a 4 game lead in the AL East. SS Krista Allen (.356, 3 hr, 16 rbi) and CF Christina Aguilera (.344, 2, 9) continue to lead the way. Allen hit an amazing .500 over her last five games (9-18, 1 hr, 4 rbi). P Joanne Whalley is 2-0 in her last 3 games (23 ip) with a 1.96 era. The Robins have remained relatively injury free so far this season with no players being placed on the disabled list.

Boston - 1B Diane Farr has been in a slump after winning the April AL Player of the Month award. Farr batted .344 with 8 homeruns and 18 RBI in April - but in her last 5 games, she is batting .200 (4-20). LF Kylie Bax continues to wield a hot bat and leads the AL in hitting with a .373 average. P Chandra North is 3-0 in her last four games with a 2.17 era in 29 ip.

Chicago - Single A prospect, C Gaby Hoffman is out at least 5 weeks with a broken finger. The Banshees lead the league in stolen bases with 35 - OF Kimberly Williams (8 steals) and OF Nikki Cox (7) top the team. P Tweet Keys is tied for 2nd in the league with a 2.30 era and is 2nd in strikeouts with 46.

Colorado - SS Meg Ryan's bat is starting to warm up - over the last 6 games, she hit .417, with 2 hr and 7 rbi. For the season, Ryan is hitting .294 with 7 hr and 18 rbi, leading the team in all three categories. P Sarah O'Hare is 3-0 in her last 3 games with a 1.19 era. CF Jodie Foster is mired in a terrible slump. She is hitting just .053 (2-38, 0 hr, 0 rbi) over last 11 games. Her average stands at .175 for the season. AL stolen base leader LF Amanda Peet went on the 15 Day DL on 4/29 with a strained achilles tendon.

Dallas - The Diamonds, looking to build some depth in their farm system, signed 5 players to minor league contracts on 5/2 - LF Audrey Quock, LF Gloria Reuben, P Bridget Fonda, 1B Nikki Ziering, and 3B Olivia D'abo. All five were assigned to the AAA Houston Moondragons. Despite 20 strike-outs in 92 ab's, 1B Danielle Fishel is hitting .315 and just recently had a 12 game hitting streak end.

Detroit - The Divas' hitting woes continue. They are last in the VBL in average, home runs, and runs scored. They are hitting 62 points behind the league leading Seattle Emeralds and have hit only 9 home runs in 24 games. Only one player, LF Dominique Swain, is in double digits in rbi's with 10. She also leads the team with 2 hr's, but is hitting only .164 and has 21 k's in 67 ab's.

New York - Though their hitting is only recently starting to show signs of life, it is the Nighthawks' pitching that has got them hovering around the .500 mark. P Joy Enriquez went 3-0 over her last 3 games with a 2.01 era and his 4-0 on the season with a 2.65 era. P Nikka Costa, despite a 2.30 era (tied for 2nd in the AL), is only 1-3. P Kelis Rogers is 4-1 with a 3.14 era.

Texas - The Wildcats are neck and neck with the Valkyries for the AL West lead. Starting May 2, Texas hosts a rare 4 game series with Colorado, which may help each team take a measure of the other. RHP Alyson Hannigan will pitch the first game, followed by RHP Gabriela Sabatini, LHP Deanna Carter and RHP Magdalena Wrobel. This should prove to be a good test for quickly improving rotation.
