NL Team Notes - May 2, 2005

Atlanta - Besides Walks and Stolen Bases, the Vixens are not ranked above 11th in any of the top ten categories. Pitchers have given up a VBL-high 31 home runs and their opponents' average is a VBL-high .282. In her last three games, Rebecca Romijn has a 8.59 era in 14.2 ip. 1B Bai Ling continues her hot pace. She was 7-19 for a .368 average over her last 5 games. She leads the team for the year with a .326 mark. CF Tawny Kitaen had a great week - she went an amazing 11-25 (.440) with 1 hr and 6 rbi in 8 games.

Los Angeles - Second round pick, 2B Leah Remini, continues to struggle. Her season average is a dismal .222 after going 2-15 (.133) over her last 5 games. LF Anna Kournikova is also having a hard go of it, hitting .228 on the season and 2-17 (.118) over her last 5 games. Kournikova does lead the VBL with 12 steals however. Only 2 of the 8 hitters with 35 or more ab's have an average above .228.

Miami Beach - Though pitching has led the way to the Flamingos being in first - its staff is first in the VBL in ERA (3.00), opponents average, (.223) and runs allowed (77) - the hitters are not to be overlooked. They are 4th in hitting and in the top half of the league in almost every other category. The pitching staff is led by Elisabeth Shue (4-1, 2.70), Whitney Houston (4-2, 3.69) and Lauren Ambrose (1.93, 10 saves), while Jo O'Meara (.387, 7 hrs, 18 rbi) and Julia Roberts (.370) lead the hitters.

Philadelphia - The Liberty Belles fell out first place to 3 games out by going 3-7 over the last 10 games, and their pitching can be blamed. The team is in the bottom five of the major pitching categories, due mostly to poor middle relief. Four of the five starters have era's below 4.00, and closer Julianne Moore has been superb, but the shaky middle relievers consistenly are blowing leads. C Keisha Knight Pulliam has improved her average to .339 on the year after going 9-20 (.450) over her last 5 games.

Phoenix - The Firebirds kept a hold of first place despite going 5-5 over their last 10 games. Their next 8 games are against division foes Seattle and Sacramento. CF Ziyi Zhang is second in the NL with a .398 average; her obp is .451. P Shirley Manson is 2-0 in her last 3 games with a 1.8o era (19 ip).

Sacramento - A 3-7 record over the last 10 games dropped the Sirens into last place in the NL West. 3B Amber Smith continues to struggle at the plate. Over her last 6 games, she hit only .105 (2-19) and is hitting only .149 for the year. Since being promoted from the AAA Anaheim Larks on 4/12, 3B Gabrielle Reece is hitting .375 (12-32). P Vanessa Marcil has 9.00 era over the last three games (13.0 ip).

St. Louis - The big three in the rotation - Megyn Price, Missy Elliot and Lela Rochon - have got the Unicorns nearing the .500 mark. Price (3-0, 1.16 era, 23.1 ip), Elliot (3-0, 1.19, 22.2) and Rochon (2-0, 3.00, 18.0) are all undefeated in their last three starts. If the Unicorns can get another starter or two to contribute, they could make a serious run for first place. 2B Cleopatra Higgins leads the NL with a .408 average.

Seattle - P Valeria Golina has been a pleasant addition to the Emeralds' rotation. Since being claimed off waivers from the Boston Shamrocks on 4/22 and promoted to the active roster on 4/25, she has gone 1-1 in two starts with a 3.21 era. With the eminent return of P Amanda Bynes from the DL, the rotation has the potential to move from being a weakness to being a strength. LF Jill Scott hit an incredible .579 (11-19) with a homer and 8 rbi's over her last 5 games. Scott was named the NL Player of the Week (5/2), hitting .520 with 1 HR and 8 RBI while slugging .840.
